Cell and Tissue Characterization

The Cell and Tissue Characterization (CTC) Core has been created in response to the need to consolidate and facilitate access to specialized and unique resources for comprehensive evaluation of skeletal and mineralized tissues as well as cells residing in these tissues, including immune cells, and to provide expertise and training for investigators who are interested in expanding their research in this field. The Core has been designed specifically to meet the needs of PCIBMR investigators developing new biomaterials and bioengineered constructs for skeletal and mineralized tissues repair and regeneration, studying pathophysiological signaling, immunomodulation in disease and regeneration, mechanisms underlying genetic and metabolic diseases, primary cancers of bone and cartilage and metastasis to bone.

        • Cell Mechanosensing
          The resources and services will be available upon funding of the P30 Resource Center grant. Investigators interested in collaborations in the areas of single cell migration/invasion assays, angiogenesis, mechanotransduction and cancer metastasis areas can contact Dr. Partha Roy at par19@pitt.edu.
        • Skeletal tissues histopathology
          The resources and services will be available upon funding of the P30 Resource Center grant.
        • Mineral characterization
          The resources and services will be available upon funding of the P30 Resource Center grant.
        • Bone Tissue Bank: Musculoskeletal Oncology Tumor Registry and Tissue Bank (MOTR)
          This IRB-approved resource (IRB# STUDY20010034) enables the collection of tissues and peripheral blood from the operating room of patients with primary and metastatic musculoskeletal cancers including sarcomas, breast, prostate, kidney, lung, myeloma, and thyroid. These samples resulting from standard of care surgical interventions of both patients with a variety of cancers in bone (primary and metastatic) as well as patients undergoing repair of bones without cancer (injury and arthritis patients) are subsequently used as the foundations of basic and translational scientific research.  Contact: Tanya Heim at heimte@upmc.edu
